रॉक एंड रोल के निर्विवाद बादशाह थे एल्विस प्रेस्ली. ८ जनवरी १९३५ को मेम्फिस के एक साधारण मध्यवर्गीय परिवार में जन्मे एल्विस के संगीत पर तत्कालीन पॉप संगीत, लोकसंगीत और चर्चों में बजने वाली उदास धुनों का मिला जुला प्रभाव पड़ा. १९५४ में अपना पेशेवर संगीत - कैरियर शुरू करने के दो साल के भीतर वे एक अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय सनसनी बन गए थे. विविधतापूर्ण शैलियों से प्रभावित संगीत और अद्वितीय आवाज़ के संगम की मदद से एल्विस ने अमरीकी संस्कृति और कलाजगत में एक नये युग का सूत्रपात किया था.

एल्विस के रेकॉर्ड्स की बिक्री का कीर्तिमान अभी तक नहीं टूटा है. अपने जीवन में उन्हें संगीत से ताल्लुक रखने वाले सारे इनामात हासिल हो चुके थे. एल्विस ने फ़िल्मों में भी काम किया.

बेहद सुदर्शन व्यक्तित्व, अपार प्रतिभा और करिश्माई फ़ितरत के स्वामी एल्विस को चाहने वाले दुनिया भर में फैले हुए हैं. १९७७ में सिर्फ़ ४२ की वय में अपनी मृत्यु से पहले एल्विस प्रेस्ली बीसवीं सदी की पॉप कला के महानायक के तौर पर स्थापित हो चुके थे.
