एक गिरी हुई स्त्री की आवाज़ में कुछ गाने

इस स्त्री का नाम बताने की ज़रूरत तो नहीं होनी चाहिए. निकारागुआ के महान कवि अर्नेस्तो कार्देनाल, मर्लिन मुनरो की मौत से गहरे प्रभावित हुए थे और इस घटना को उन्होंने एक अद्भुत कविता में दर्ज़ भी किया था. मैं चाहता था उस कविता को यहां आप हिन्दी में पढ़ पाते (अनुवाद मंगलेश डबराल ने किया है) लेकिन बदक़िस्मती से वह अनुवाद मेरे कबाड़ में इधर उधर हो गया है. इसलिए फ़िलहाल अभी अंग्रेज़ी अनुवाद लगा रहा हूं (मूल कविता स्पानी में है).

मर्लिन तमाम स्थापित सामाजिक मानदण्डों के हिसाब से पूरी तरह गिरी हुई औरत के रूप में 'बदनाम' भी रही.

मर्लिन मुनरो (१९२६-१९६२) आज दुनिया भर में एक 'कल्ट फ़िगर' की तरह देखी जाती हैं. इस बेहतरीन अदाकारा के जीवन का दर्द सारे संसार की औरतों के दर्द जैसा ही भीषण था. बेहद गरीब घर में पैदा हुई मर्लिन अपनी संभावित आत्महत्या से पहले हालीवुड की सर्वकालीन सर्वलोकप्रिय अभिनेत्री के तौर पर प्रतिष्ठित हो चुकी थी.

माफ़ करेंगे मैं यहां मर्लिन की जीवनी सुनाने नहीं आया हूं. वह सब आपको किताबों और इन्टरनेट पर आसानी से मिल ही जाएगा. पहले प्रस्तुत है कार्देनाल की कविता 'मर्लिन मुनरो के लिए प्रार्थना' और उस के बाद उस की किशोरियों जैसी अल्हड़ आवाज़ में चार छोटे-छोटे गीत. उसका गीत 'Teach me Tiger' स्कूल के समय से मेरा पसंदीदा रहा है.

Like any other shopgirl

And her life was unreal like a dream that a psychiatrist interprets and files.

Her romances were a kiss with closed eyes
and when she opened them
she realized she had been under floodlights
as they killed the floodlights!
and they took down the two walls of the room (it was a movie set)
while the Director left with his scriptbook
because the scene had been shot.

Or like a cruise on a yacht, a kiss in Singapore, a dance in Rio
the reception at the mansion of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor

all viewed in a poor apartment's tiny living room.
The film ended without the final kiss.

She was found dead in her bed with her hand on the phone.
And the detectives never learned who she was going to call.
She was
like someone who had dialed the number of the only friendly voice
and only heard the voice of a recording that says: WRONG NUMBER.
Or like someone who had been wounded by gangsters
reaching for a disconnected phone.

Lord
whoever it might have been that she was going to call
and didn't call (and maybe it was no one
or Someone whose number isn't in the Los Angeles phonebook)

You answer that telephone!
