India take out quad series

India have taken out the 2012 International Under-19 Quadrangular Series, cruising to a seven-wicket win over Australia in Townsville on Sunday.

After being sent into bat by the Indians, the Aussies were restricted to just 9-194 from their 50 overs, with seamers Sandeep Sharma and Harmeet Singh taking 4-51 and 2-33 respectively. In reply, a brilliant unbeaten 112 from number three Unmukt Chand saw India mow down the target with few problems and they reached 3-198 in the 43rd over.

The Australian innings was on the back foot almost immediately, with medium pacer Kamal Passi drawing an edge from opener James Peirson (5), who was caught behind by India wicketkeeper Smit Patel. From there the wickets kept on tumbling for the Australians, with Kurtis Patterson (0), Travis Head (12) and Will Bosisto (5) making little impression on the scorers. When left-arm orthodox spinner Vikas Mashra had opener Meyrick Buchanan (59) caught behind the Australians were in deep trouble at 5-114. Nick Stevens showed some fight with a patient 24, and a gritty unbeaten 41 from Sam Hain gave the bowlers some runs to play with it, but it never looked like being enough.

The Australians had their tails up early, however, when speedster Pat Cummins removed openers Akhil Herwadkar (2) and Manan Vohra (23), but Chand's appearance immediately had the run rate moving in an upward direction. The right-hander guided the tourists home with a superb 112 from 146 balls, while paceman Gurinder Sandhu was the only other Aussie to take a wicket.

The win completed a remarkable turnaround for the Indians, who went winless in the group section of the competition before thumping first-placed England in their semi-final and then easing past the host nation in the final.
