जिम कॉर्बेट की ' माई इंडिया ' का पहला पन्ना

जिम कॉर्बेट (१८७५-१९५५) को दुनिया भर में वन्यजीवन और पर्यावरण की परवाह करने वाले बहुत इज्ज़त के साथ देखते हैं। नैनीताल और कालाढूंगी में अपने जीवन का लंबा हिस्सा बिता चुके कॉर्बेट इन इलाकों में रहने वाले लोगों से बहुत अपनापन रखते थे और उनके लिए लगातार काफी कुछ किया करते थे। १९४७ में उन्हें बेमन से भारत छोड़ना पड़ा और अपने जीवन के अन्तिम साल उन्होने केन्या में गुजारे। इन साधारण ग्रामीण लोगों को वे भारत से जाने के बाद भी नहीं भूले। भारत के संस्मरणों को लेकर १९५२ में उनकी किताब 'माई इंडिया' प्रकाशित हुई। इस पुस्तक का पहला पन्ना, जिसमें उन्होने भारत को लेकर बहुत अंतरंग बातें लिखते हुए इस किताब को भारत के गरीबों को समर्पित किया है, आदमखोर बाघों का खात्मा करने वाले इस वीर के व्यक्तित्व का एक दूसरा ही आयाम हमारे सामने लाता है। प्रस्तुत है:

If you are looking for a history of India, or for an account of the rise and fall of the British raj, or for the reasons for the cleaving of the subcontinent into two mutually antagonistic parts and the effect this mutilation will have on the respective sections, and ultimately on Asia, you will not find it in these pages; for though I have spent a lifetime in the country, I lived too near the seat of events, and was too intimately associated with the actors, to get the perspective needed for the impartial recording of these matters.

In my India, the India I know, there are four hundred million people, ninety percent of whom are simple, honest, brave, loyal, hard-working souls whose daily prayer to God, and to whatever Government is in power, to give them security of life and of property to enable them to enjoy the fruits of their labours. It is of these people, who are admittedly poor, and who are often described as ‘India’s starving millions’ among whom I have lived and whom I love, that I shall endeavour to tell in the pages of this book, which I humbly dedicate to my friends, the poor of India.
