हेमिंग्वे के उपन्यास 'ओल्ड मैन एंड द सी' में बूढ़े सान्तियागो को अपने अभागे दिनों से पार पाने को जिस मछली की तलाश होती है, उसे पकड़ने में किया गया उसका संघर्ष अब एक किवदन्ती बन चुका है. होश संभालने के बाद सबसे पहले संभवतः जिस कथानक ने सबसे ज्यादा अपनी तरफ खींचा था वह बूढ़े सान्तियागो का की संघर्षगाथा ही थी.

उस उपन्यास को अपनी थीम बनाकर ख्यात अमेरिकी गायक-गीतकार और रेकॉर्डिंग आर्टिस्ट जॉन वेल्डन केल, जिन्हें जे.जे. केल के नाम से जाना जाता है, ने एक गाना रचा था - ओल्ड मैन एंड मी. इस गीत में सान्तियागो को सुबह-सुबह  ही मछली मिल जाती है. सुन्दर गीत है.
