२५ अप्रैल १९१७ को जन्मीं लेडी ऐला यानी ऐला जेन फिट्जेराल्ड अमेरिकी जैज़ के क्षेत्र का सबसे बड़ा नाम मानी जाती हैं. आज से मैं आप को उनके अतुलनीय संगीत की कुछ बानगियाँ दिखाऊँगा. अपने उनसठ साल के गायन करियर में ऐला ने तेरह ग्रैमी अवार्ड जीते. सुर की विशुद्धता, त्रुटिहीन तलफ्फुज और शानदार आवाज़ उनके गायन की विशेषताएं थीं और कई पीढियां उनकी दीवानी रहीं.
ऐला से मेरा पहला परिचय मेरे स्वर्गीय मित्र फ्रेडरिक स्मेटाचेक ने करवाया था. मुझे भीमताल में उसकी जून एस्टेट में कुछ साल पुरानी मई की एक उमसभरी दोपहरी याद है जब ऐला का रेकॉर्ड बज रहा था और शैय्याग्रस्त फ्रेडी ने अपने आँखों के कोरों पर आ गईं आंसू की बूंदों को पोछा था. ऐला के बारे में बहुत सारी दिलचस्प चीज़ें आपको उन के संगीत पर लगने वाली अगली पोस्टों में बताऊँगा. आज ऐला की अतिविख्यात वही कम्पोजीशन ऑल थ्रू द नाईट-

Ella was an absolute gem! One of the brightest jewel of American Jazz crown. My daughter and I love her the same, so you can she her appeal through the generations.
